Cougars Rally Past Wildcats in the Ninth

TUCSON, Ariz. – P.J. Jones knocked in two runs with a single in the top of the ninth inning and Washington State rallied past Arizona 6-5 in Pac-12 baseball at Hi Corbett Field, Saturday night.

With two outs in the top of the ninth, Nick Tanielu reached on an Arizona (11-10, 1-1 Pac-12) error and Yale Rosen doubled to put runners at second and third. The hit capped a 4-for-5 night for Rosen.

P.J. Jones followed with his third hit of the game to score Tanielu and pinch runner Cameron Frost and give Washington State (5-9, 1-1) a 6-5 lead.

Ian Hamilton (2-1) recorded the final five outs for the Cougars to earn the victory while Bobby Dalbec (0-2) suffered the loss following his blown the save in the ninth.

After the Wildcats scored a run in the first inning off Washington State starter Joe Pistorese, the Cougars responded with three runs in the top of the second to take a 3-1 advantage.

With one out, Jones singled and moved to second when Jason Monda was hit by a pitch. Ian Sagdal and Ben Roberts delivered back-to-back, run-scoring singles to give the Cougars the lead and a third run scored on a throwing error.

The Wildcats tied the game with two runs in the third and took a 4-3 lead with a run in the fourth. Washington State tied the game in the fifth with a two-out rally. Rosen singled, stole second and scored on a single by Jones.

Pistorese pitched into the seventh and left after giving up a leadoff single and recording the first out of the inning on a sacrifice bunt. Scott Simon relieved Pistorese and struck out the first man he faced before giving up a single that gave the Wildcats a 5-4 advantage.

The series concludes, Sunday with first pitch slated for noon.
