BOISE, Idaho – Junior Elizaveta Luzina’s straight-set win at No. 1 singles was the clinching match as No. 51 Washington State defeated Boise State 4-3 in nonconference tennis action Thursday morning at the Boas Indoor Tennis Center. With the win the Cougars improve to 12-2 for the season while Boise State falls to 4-5.

After taking the opening doubles point, the Cougars trailed early in four of the six singles matches. Luzina, who earlier in the week entered the national rankings at No. 116, had little trouble in the opening set against Sandy Vo, winning 6-1 en route to a 6-1, 6-4 victory. That win gave WSU an insurmountable 4-1 lead. At No. 4 Olga Musilovich was in control most of the day, defeating Morgan Basil 6-3, 6-2 to give the Cougars their second victory after Boise State’s Megan LaLone evened the match at 1-1 as she defeated Charlotte Koning, 6-3, 6-0 at No. 6.

WSU’s Maria Biryukova trailed much of the first set before rallying late for a 7-6, 6-3 win over Teal Vosburgh at No. 3 singles, giving WSU a 3-1 lead and setting the stage for Luzina. With the team outcome decided, the Broncos posted straight-set wins at No. 2 where Anissa Bryant-Swift defeated Lize Leenknecht 6-3, 7-5, and Milena Toseva’s 7-5, 6-4 win over Dajana Ognjenovic at No. 5.

In doubles action, WSU swept the first two matches to secure the point. Biryukova and Musilovich were first off after an 8-4 win over Bryant-Swift and Toseva at No. 2. Leenknecht and Luzina then clinched the point as they defeated Vo and Basil 8-4 at No. 1. With the doubles point already earned, the No. 3 match was halted with the Cougars’ Koning and Ognjenovic trailing LaLone and Vosburgh 5-6.

The Cougars are off until March 7 when they begin Pac-12 Conference play against Colorado at the Simmelink Tennis Courts at Hollingbery Fieldhouse. Match time is set for 11 a.m.
