Cougars Upset No. 4 USC
PULLMAN, Wash. - The Washington State volleyball team’s thrilling 3-2 victory over No. 4 USC Nov. 17 in Pullman produced many achievements worth noting.
The Cougars were behind 0-2 going into the third set and produced a 25-22 win followed by another 25-22 win in the fourth. WSU fell behind in the fifth set 14-8 and fought off six consecutive match points en route to the 21-19 win.
This match marked the first time WSU has defeated USC since 2009 and the second AVCA Top 25 ranked opponent WSU has defeated this season. This was the first five-set match USC has lost this year and the first time USC has lost to a team not in the top 15 RPI rankings. WSU holds a three-to-two advantage in five-set matches all-time among the 57 contests between WSU and USC, and a three-to-one advantage in five-set matches played in Bohler Gym.
With the victory over USC, Washington State moved to a 17-12 overall record and with four matches remaining in the season the Cougars are guaranteed a winning record for the first time since 2009.
WSU is in the Bay area this weekend to take on No. 5 Stanford, Nov. 22 at 6 p.m., and No. 23 California, Nov. 24 at 11 a.m. Both matches will be televised on the Pac-12 Networks.
