TUCSON, Ariz. -- Playing in its fourth match in seven days, the Washington State volleyball team (16-11 overall record, 3-11 in Pac-12) fell to Arizona (17-8 overall, 7-6 Pac-12) in set scores of 25-18, 25-14, and 26-24 Thursday night at the McKale Center in Tucson.
Jaicee Harris led the Cougars with 12 kills with Kyra Holt added nine kills while Ver’Leea Hardaway contributed six kills, hit .455 and had five blocks. Camryn Irwin set up 26 assists, 10 digs and three blocks. Marcelina Glab had five blocks as WSU out-blocked Arizona 10 to six. Kate Sommer led the Cougars with 12 digs and had WSU’s lone ace.
“I thought Jaicee did a fantastic job tonight. She’s been battling some injuries and hasn’t been too effective but tonight she was,” WSU Head Coach Jen Greeny said. “She was matched up against their setter and she was aggressive. Really happy with Jaicee’s play tonight.”
The Wildcats’ Madi Kingdon led the match with 17 kills, hit .317, three aces and 12 digs. Penina Snuka had 35 assists and 11 digs. Halli Amaro and Olivia Magill each contributed three blocks. Arizona hit .266 as a team and held WSU to a .110 hitting percentage.
The close third set had 13 tie scores and eight lead changes and WSU stymied the Wildcats on the first match point but eventually fell, 26-24.
“We had way too many unforced errors tonight by our hitters especially and we’re definitely not going to be in a match if we can’t keep the ball in play,” Greeny said. “The legs were tired and we’ve traveled and we were not crisp tonight. We still need to be better at keeping the ball in play and giving ourselves another chance. We have to find a way to stop those runs at two or three points at the very most. We have been working on this in practice and it worked well in the Utah match. It hasn’t worked well for us on the road so we will get back to focusing on that in practice.”
WSU hosts UCLA and No. 4 USC next weekend at Bohler Gym. The Cougars-Bruins match is Friday, Nov. 15, at 7 p.m., and the WSU-USC match is Sunday, Nov. 17, at 1 p.m. and will be broadcast on the Pac-12 Networks.
