TEMPE, Ariz. -- The Washington State volleyball team (16-10 overall record, 3-10 in Pac-12) dropped a match to Arizona State (16-9, 5-8) in scores of 25-22, 25-22, 25-17, Wednesday night at Wells Fargo Arena in Tempe.

Kyra Holt led WSU with 11 kills while Marcelina Glab had 10 kills, hitting .467. Camryn Irwin had 32 assists. Holt, Glab and Irwin each had four blocks as the Cougars and Sun Devils tied with seven team blocks each. Kate Sommer led the match with a season-best 24 digs. Shawna Lum had the lone WSU ace on the night.

ASU’s BreElle Bailey had a match-high 15 kills and Whitney Follette added eight kills, hitting .571, and had four blocks. Shannan McCready had 35 assists and Stephanie Preach had 19 digs. ASU hit .242 on the night while WSU hit .144.

“Those first two sets, especially, were really close and we let them go on runs. Our passing broke down and then we couldn’t put the ball away,” WSU Head Coach Jen Greeny said. “They played some good defense and then in set three we couldn’t get the momentum back and recover. During those stretches the passing broke down and we couldn’t get the ball to our middles. I thought Marcelina and Ver’Leea did a really nice job for us tonight but we couldn’t get the ball to them as much as we wanted to. Arizona State is definitely improving and is on the upswing. It was a tough loss. We couldn’t get anything going tonight.”

WSU will play its fourth match in seven days Thursday, taking on Arizona (16-8 overall, 6-6 Pac-12) at 7 p.m. PT in Tucson. The match will be on the Pac-12 Networks.
