PULLMAN, Wash. – Sophomore Cara Wegner scored two goals and Washington State knocked off visiting Colorado, 3-0 in Pac-12 Conference women’s soccer, Friday.
Wegner scored the game-winner in the fourth minute and notched her second of the day in the 52nd minute to record the first two-goal match of her career.
The Cougars (9-1-3, 2-1-1 Pac-12) also got a goal from senior Micaela Castain, here team-leading 11th of the season, in the 58th minute.
“Our energy level was very good at the start of both halves” Washington State Head Coach Keidane McAlpine said. “Defensively, we dodged some chances, but it is always good to come away with a clean sheet.”
Washington State’s first goal was set up on a cross from the right by sophomore Kourtney Guetlein. The ball was deflected to the far post off a defender and Wegner tap it across the line for a 1-0 lead.
In the second half, senior Delaney Zalud sent a ball to the near post from the right side. The ball hit a Colorado (10-3-0, 2-2 Pac-12) defender and Wegner finished at the six.
The Cougars’ third goal was a thing of beauty. Guetlein’s cross to the top of the box was controlled by Castain with her back to the goal. Castain then spun to elude a defender before blasting a shot inside the far right post.
