PULLMAN, Wash. – Washington State captured singles titles in all three flights during the first day of action at the WSU Invitational Friday at the WSU Outdoor Tennis Courts.
Sophomore Maria Biryukova won her first title of the fall season as she was victorious in the No. 1 flight while sophomore Lize Leenknecht won the No. 2 singles flight and sophomore Dajana Ognjenovic captured the No. 3 singles title.
In the top singles flight, Biryukova posted a 6-2, 6-1 win over Eastern Washington’s Moira Hedberg in the first round and followed that with a 6-2, 5-7, (10-6) win over Idaho’s Almudena Sanz, needing a third-set tiebreaker to seal the victory. In the final she rallied from a set down to defeat teammate Elizaveta Luzina, 2-6, 6-2, (10-6) for the title. Luzina reached the final by posting straight-set wins over Seattle’s Sarah Lucas in the first round and Idaho’s Vicky Lozano in the semifinal.
In the second singles flight, Leenknecht posted straight-set wins in all three matches en route to the title. She defeated Eastern Washington’s Erin Blessing in the first round, Idaho’s Rita Bermudez in one semifinal the posted a 6-5, 6-2 win over Idaho’s Galina Bykova in the final.
Flight three singles saw Ognjenovic only drop a total of seven games as she won her first singles title this fall. In the first round she blanked Seattle’ Dayna Bennett, 6-0, 6-0, before a 6-2, 6-2 win over Idaho’s Belen Barcenilla in one semifinal. In the championship match Ognjenovic earned a 6-2, 6-1 victory over Gabriella Weissman of Seattle.
All singles matches at the WSU Invitational were held Friday with doubles play to be contested both Saturday and Sunday. Action continues Saturday at 10 a.m. at the WSU Outdoor Tennis Courts.
