THIS WEEK

The Washington State swim team will open its season Thursday at Stanford in a dual meet against the Cardinal, and will then face California in another dual meet Friday…Thursday’s meet will start at 3 p.m…Friday’s meet in Berkeley, Calif. will begin at 1 p.m.

 HEAD COACH TOM JAGER SAYS

“I’m an advocate of a mandatory Pac-12 schedule and an advocate of competing against the best to be the best. So, we accept the challenge and we will find out where we are and what we can become.”

WSU LAST SEASON

The Cougars finished 6-6 in dual meets last season in one of the strongest swimming conferences in the country…finished sixth in a competitive field of 10 teams at the Hawkeye Invitational, and placed ninth at the Pac-12 Championships…Loree Olson highlighted the season by becoming the Cougar all-time record holder in the 400 IM…Olson also placed second all-time on the Washington State records list in the 200 back, and made the top-10 lists in two other events…Emma Johansson placed in the top three of the Cougar all-time lists in the 50 free, 100 back, and 100 butterfly…Shelbi Luchini notched the third-best time in Cougar history in the 200 back, as did Kelly Tannhauser in the 400 IM…total of eight Cougar swimmers made the Cougar all-time top-ten lists.

2013-14 OUTLOOK

The 21-member squad returns 14 letterwinners, including seniors Taylor Indahl, Emma Johansson, Anne Kenney, Heather Morlan, and Kelly Tannhauser…Washington State welcomes seven freshmen to the team.

COACHING STAFF

Head coach Tom Jager enters his third year at Washington State after spending seven years coaching at Idaho…Jager is a six-time NCAA Champion, and a two-time Olympic gold medalist…Jager is joined by assistant coach Adriana Quirke…Quirke was Jager’s assistant coach at Idaho for his last three seasons with the Vandals, and quickly made the move to Washington State after Jager was hired as the Cougars’ head coach…rounding out the Cougar coaching staff is volunteer assistant coach Jesse Grow.
