BOISE, Idaho – Sophomore Maria Biryukova captured the Orange Flight singles title to lead the Washington State tennis team during the final day of play at the Boise State Jack Taylor Classic, Sunday at the Apple Tennis Center.
In the final, Biryukova posted a straight-set win over Boise State’s Bobbi Oshiro, 7-6, 6-3, capping her Cougar debut with a title. Biryukova, who transferred to WSU from Baylor prior to the fall semester, entered at the top-seed and won each of her final three matches in straight sets.
Washington State also had two players competing in the back draw as junior Elizaveta Luzina posted a 7-5, 7-6 win over Megan LaLone of Boise State while sophomore Dajana Ognjenovic defeated Weber State’s Nittaya Phonharath, 6-3, 6-3 to captured the consolation draw.
In doubles play Biryukova and Ognjenovic defeated Ellie Crum and Wena Tsan of Montana State, 8-4, while Luzina and Lize Leenknecht posted an 8-5 win over Oshiro and LaLone.
Washington State returns to action Friday when it hosts the Cougar Classic at the WSU Outdoor Tennis Courts. Play begins at 9 a.m.
