Cougars Complete Day One at Jack Taylor Classic

BOISE, Idaho – Sophomore Maria Biryukova advanced to the quarterfinals to highlight first-day play for Washington State tennis at the Boise State Jack Taylor Classic, Friday at the Appleton Tennis Center and Julia Davis Park.

Biryukova, a transfer from Baylor playing in her first match as a Cougar, entered the Orangle Flight singles as the top seed and received a bye before defeating Seattle’s Kelli Woodman, 6-2, 3-6, 6-1. Also in the Orange Flight sophomore Dajana Ognjeovic fell in her first match to Abilene Christian’s Erin Walker, 6-0, 6-1, then prevailed in the back draw, posting a 6-0, 5-4 (ret.) win over Eatern Washington’s Katrina Domingo.

In Blue Flight singles play, junior Elizaveta Luzina earned a 6-0, 6-0 win over Seattle’s Anna Lambert in the opening round before falling to Idaho’s Almudena Sanz in second-round play. Sophomore Lize Leenknecht also posted a first-round win, defeating Montana State’s Iva Parapunova 6-3, 7-5, then dropped a 6-0, 6-2 contest to Idaho’s Vicky Lozano.

In the White Flight, freshman Cathrine Arnholdt Pedersen received a bye before falling to Molly Crum of Montana State, 6-0, 6-2.

In doubles action, Luzina and Leenknecht advanced to the quarterfinals when their opponents defaulted.

Play continues Saturday for both singles and doubles.
