Eldridge and Keller Finish In Top 5 At Husky Invite

December 6, 1998

FEDERAL WAY, Wash. - Junior Erin Eldridge and senior Katie Keller led the Washington State women's swim team to a fourth place finish at the four-day Husky Invitational held at the King County Aquatic Center.

Eldridge clocked in an NCAA consideration time in the preliminary round of the 100-yard breaststroke with a time of 1 minute, 3.62 seconds. This broke a 1981 meet record previously held by Kathy Smith. Eldridge later slipped to third in the finals with a 1:03.71. However, both times marked season bests for the Kirkland, Wash. native. Eldridge also finished fifth in the 200 breaststroke with a 2:17.88, surpassing yet another NCAA consideration time standard in the event (2:18.32).

Teammate Katie Keller finished fourth in the 100 freestyle with a time of 52.33. The Seattle, Wash. native also finished 16th in the consolation round of the 200 freestyle with a 1:55.99.

In the longest event of the invitational - the 1650 freestyle - junior Gretchen Chambers and senior Julie Thom placed in the top 10. Chambers (Adelaide, Australia) finished sixth with a 17:21.08 and Thom (Portland, Ore.) finished ninth with a 17:32.02.

The Cougars also clocked in three of their fastest times this season in relay events. Washington State's A lineup teams finished third in the 400 freestyle relay (3:34.88), fifth in the 200 medley relay (1:47.57), and seventh in the 800 freestyle relay (7:50.91).

WSU now prepares for its winter break training, before bringing in the New Year with a Jan. 16 dual meet against UCLA and Fresno State in Los Angeles, Calif.
