Cougars And Seminoles Shatter Pool Records

October 24, 1998

PULLMAN, Wash. — The Washington State women's swim team opened its first home meet of the season with a pool record-breaking performance.

The relay team of Anna Hohmann (Victoria, Australia), Erin Eldridge (Kirkland, Wash.), Kelley Miedema (Cape Town, South Africa), and Katie Keller (Seattle, Wash.) finished first in the 400-yard freestyle relay with a time of 3 minutes, 53.97 seconds. This time eclipsed a four-year-old Gibb Pool record set by Colorado State in 1994.

Despite this mark, first-time opponent Florida State victored to a 113-91 win. Tanya Gurr and Anne Blachford lead the way for the Lady Seminoles erasing pool records in the 200 freestyle (1:52.61) and 200 IM (2:06.52).

Cougar Gretchen Chambers dominated the 1000 and 500 freestyle events. The junior from Adelaide, Australia, finished the 1000 in a time of 10:30.91 and the 500 in a time of 5:10.66. She captured two of the Cougars' three individual wins at the dual meet. Eldridge claimed the other Washington State victory finishing first in the 200 breaststroke with a 2:20.87.

"We started on a high note and in-between we did well," WSU coach Rocco Aceto said. "We swam great and we are coming along. A year ago we couldn't even sit on the same blocks as those kids. We have two weeks to get better before our next dual meet and this time we don't have to worry about recovering from a long trip."

Now 2-3 in dual meet competition, the Cougars head to Federal Way, Wash. Nov. 6 for the Husky Relays, before a home meeting against San Jose State Nov. 14.
