MATTHEWS' HIGH SCHOOL CAREER

Attended Wilson High, where he was coached by Don Clegg...earned four letters each in football and track...as a SOPHOMORE he finished in the top eight in the State 100m competition...JUNIOR year he was named to the All-Narrows League first team as a tailback and defensive back...gained over 800 yards in 65 carries...SENIOR season gained 1,200 yards in six games before being sidelined with a broken collar bone...scored 15 touchdowns, scoring once every five carries...named to the all-league team as a running back...picked to play in the State all-star game.

MATTHEWS' WSU CAREER

Freshman (1997-98): Redshirt season...earned the defensive scout team award for the week of the Boise State game.

Sophomore (1998-99): V-letter...earned varsity letter while playing in eight games at cornerback and on special teams...made 13 tackles, 12 of them primary or unassisted...picked off only interception at UCLA...had 11 tackles against the Bruins and deflected one pass after stepping for Dee Moronkola, who was injured early in the contest...did not play in three of WSU's last four games...earned the following game awards: Cougar Tackler - UCLA.
