Cougars Come Up Short Against Aztecs 12-10, Defeat Houston 17-5

Curran drives in five runs in win over U of H.

February 7, 1998

SAN DIEGO -- Steve Curran drove in five runs, including a sixth inning grand slam to lead the hitting attack in a 17-5 downing of Houston. A late inning comeback fueled by Casey Kelley's two-run homerun was stopped short in the nightcap, as San Diego State defeated the Cougs 12-10 Saturday at Tony Gwynn Stadium.

In the morning game, Jamaal Gaines (1-0) was impressive in his Cougar (2-1) debut, giving up just one run in six solid innings of work. Houston (0-2) starter Jon McDonald (0-1) took the loss, allowing four runs to cross the plate before his fourth inning exit. In the nightcap, starter Todd Meldahl (0-1) was roughed up early and often, giving up seven runs in his three innings on the mound. The relief corp for the Cougars was impressive, giving up just three earned runs over the next six innings. Six Washington State errors accounted for two costly unearned runs.

Against Houston, Washington State sent 43 batters to the plate, scattering 18 hits against eight Houston pitchers. Curran was perfect at the plate, going 3-for-3, including five runs batted in. His sixth inning grand slam over the right field fence increased WSU's commanding lead to 10-1. Freshman right fielder Jason Grove was also perfect at the plate, going 2-for-2 while scoring two runs. Ray Hattenburg, Boyd Robertson, Steve Gleason, and Casey Kelley each added two hits in the win.

In the nightcap, the Aztecs used a steady scoring attack and solid relief pitching from Joe Bernhard to slide past the Cougars. Bernhard (1-0) worked the final 5.2 innings for SDSU, giving up four runs on eight Cougar hits. Three of the four runs were scored in WSU's ninth inning rally, before Bernhard could get Grove to line out to left field to end the game. Casey Kelley fueled the rally, hitting his third opposite field home run in as many games. Kelley was the hitting hero for the Cougars, going 4-for-6 at the plate, while pushing home three runs. Boyd Robertson added two hits and three runs batted in, but committed two errors at second base. Shawn Stevenson and Grove each added two hits in Washington State's first loss of the '98 campaign.

The Cougars were very impressive at the plate during their first road trip of the season. As a team they hit .390, collecting 39 hits in 123 at-bats, and scoring 40 runs in the three games. Casey Kelley was 9-for-16 with three homeruns, while Boyd Robertson hit at a .466 (7-15) clip in his first games as a Coug. Washington State outscored their opponents 40-to-21.

Washington State will next travel to Arizona State where they will meet the sixth ranked Sun Devils. The Cougars are set to battle ASU at Packard Stadium in a three game series starting Friday. Games times are 7 p.m., 7 p.m., and 1 p.m. respectively.
