Cougars Shutout Eastern Washington 4-0 In Season Opener

Friday, August 28, 1998

PULLMAN, Wash. -- The Washington State women's soccer squad scored four goals in the first half, including two identical scoring corner kick plays in the first four minutes, to shut out the visiting Eastern Washington Eagles 4-0 in the season opener for both teams.

Sophomore Deka Dewitt and junior Meagin Donovan each headed the ball in the left back corner of the net as a result of two picture perfect corner kicks from freshman Beth Childs.

"If someone targets me I just want to put the ball in the goal and do whatever I can to get there," said Dewitt on the scoring header to start the game. "I just headed it and put it in."

Senior Randi Glas also added to the Cougar offense, scoring on a cross from freshman Lindsey Millspaugh, just after coming off the bench in the 30th minute. Glas also assisted Dewitt's second goal in the 43rd minute.

Freshman goalkeeper Lindsey Jorgensen earned a shutout in her WSU debut.

"We got out to a good start," said head coach Dan Tobias who notched his first career win at WSU. "In particular, the first 15 minutes of the game we did a good job pressuring them in their half of the field and created some turnovers."

The Eagles' only shot on goal came from freshman Kyla Hamilton in the second half. Goalkeeper Amy Schmitt had 10 saves and kept the Cougars scoreless in the second half.

"It was a good test to see where we are at," Eastern Washington coach Jennifer Martin said following the match. "We did some good things with possession but we're not taking that big step into the offensive third."

The Cougars travel to Santa Clara Friday and then on to play the University of the Pacific Sunday.
