Dewitt, Millspaugh Score Twice As Cougars Shutout Portland State 5-0

September 18, 1998

PULLMAN, Wash. – Deka Dewitt and Lindsey Millspaugh each scored a pair and Valerie Whitemaine added her first collegiate goal to lead the Washington State women's soccer squad over Portland State 5-0 at the Cougar Soccer Field Friday.

The Cougars (2-2-2) handed Portland State (1-5-0) their fifth consecutive loss on the road.

Sophomore Dewitt (Auburn, Wash.) scored the first two Cougar goals, both headers from assists by freshman Beth Childs (Snoqualmie, Wash.). Dewitt attained her second multiple-goal match this season and the third of her career.

In the 67th minute, WSU added a third goal when senior Randi Glas (Grand Forks, N.D.) split the Viking defense with a pass to Millspaugh (Kent, Wash.) who broke away and chipped the ball over Portland State goalkeeper Kim Street.

Freshman Whitemaine scored her first WSU career goal in the 75th minute and was assisted by sophomore Jessica Fransen (Spokane, Wash.). Millspaugh scored the final goal with an assist by freshman Laura Grunenfelder (Port Orchard, Wash.) and earned her first WSU career multiple-goal match.

WSU Head Coach Dan Tobias credited the strong offensive performance to the solid play in the Cougar defensive half. "We really played our best 90 minutes defensively and only allowed a few corner kicks which tells me we played more balls away from pressure and kept the gaps short and tight. We didn't have to defend as much as we had the first five games and that's important," said Tobias.

The Cougars hope to continue their winning ways at home when they host Minnesota (3-1-0) Monday at 2 p.m.
