September 12, 1997

PULLMAN, Wash. - Sophomore Mandy Clemens scored two goals and assisted another goal as visiting Santa Clara topped Washington State 3-0 in women's soccer action Friday afternoon.

The Broncos (4-0-0), ranked No. 5 by Soccer America, got the winning goal just 87 seconds into the match when Clemens crossed the ball to the far post and sophomore Jacqui Little was able to push the ball over the line from six yards out. The Cougars (1-3-0) lost their third straight match and were outshot by the Broncos 17-5.

Clemens nailed her first goal in the 28th minute as she took a 25-yard right cross from Kylie Bivens and headed the ball inside the left post at close range to give Santa Clara a 2-0 halftime advantage.

The final goal for Santa Clara came in the 56th minute as junior Lisa Nanez nailed a long ball from midfield that bounced ten yards in front of the Cougar goal. Clemens was there to knock the ball past WSU freshman goalkeeper Shannon Wilson (Las Vegas, Nevada).

Clemens missed a third goal early in the second half as she beat a WSU defender, weaved past Wilson, but fired a shot on the open goal wide left.

Wilson, who finished with four saves, made a spectacular play to stop a Santa Clara penalty kick. Little was dragged down in the box by a Cougar defender which set up the kick for sophomore Nikki Serlenga. Wilson held her spot in the center of the goal box and Serlenga drilled a shot that Wilson was able to knock down.
