Cougars Shutout By George Mason 2-0

Saturday, September 26, 1998

FAIRFAX, Va. – Freshman Katy Robertson scored two goals to lead George Mason (7-2-0) over the Washington State women's soccer squad 2-0 Saturday in Fairfax, Va. The Cougars (2-4-2) were held scoreless for the first time this season.

With only three seconds left in the first half, Jayme Beamer received a pass from Lisa Berra and crossed it to Robertson who headed the ball past freshman goalkeeper Lindsey Jorgensen (North Bend, Wash.).

The Patriots' second goal came in the 58th minute when Robertson scored on a penalty kick after a hand ball was called on senior defender Lynsey Coffey (Santa Rosa, Calif.) in the box.

According to WSU Head Coach Dan Tobias, the Cougars had four scoring opportunities in the last 15 minutes of the match. Sophomore Deka Dewitt (Auburn, Wash.) hit a volley wide of the goal, while senior Kim Schelpf (Ocean, N.J.) had a shot deflected by goalkeeper Jaime Pagliarulo for a corner kick. Freshman Valerie Whitemaine (Redmond, Wash.) beat a defender and the keeper but shot the ball wide and junior Christina Pallan (Las Vegas, Nev.) missed an opportunity after receiving a through pass from Dewitt.

"We were a little unfortunate that we weren't more precise with the chances we got," said Tobias. "The chances that we were able to create were good, but if we could capsulize how we played in the final 15 minutes and play like that for 90 minutes we would have been in much better shape. We still have miscommunications that are leading to goals by our opponents."

The Cougars continue their East Coast road trip Monday when they face George Washington University (1-6-0) at 8 a.m. PST in Washington D.C.
