Cougars Still Winless On the Road, Tie Denver 2-2

September 11, 1998

LOGAN, Utah – Denver midfielder Jessie Nelson scored on a direct kick with less than seven minutes left in regulation to tie the Washington State women's soccer squad 2-2 in the opening match of the Brenna Hansen Memorial Tournament at Utah State University Friday.

Both teams were held scoreless through two sudden death overtime periods. The game marked the second straight double overtime 2-2 tie for WSU.

The Cougars (1-1-2) were down 1-0 with three minutes left in the first half when freshman Lindsey Millspaugh (Kent, Wash.) tied the match with her first WSU career goal, assisted by a cross from senior Kim Schelpf (Ocean, N.J.).

WSU took the lead in the 64th minute on a goal by junior Christina Pallan (Las Vegas, Nev.) with an assist from Millspaugh, only to have the Pioneers (1-1-1) tie the match on the direct kick by Nelson.

"We continue to create good scoring chances and battled until the end. Both (Denver) goals were just breakdowns on our part. We have to minimize our mistakes even more because teams are capitalizing on them," said WSU Head Coach Dan Tobias.

The Cougars will look for their first win on the road Sunday at 10 a.m. PST, when they meet Cal State Fullerton at Utah State to continue tournament play.
