WALNUT CREEK, Calif. - Juniors Natalie Elkind and Anna Miller were named to the 2006 Pacific-10 All-Academic second team as announced Monday by Pac-10 Commissioner Tom Hansen. Five Cougars were also named to the honorable mention list.

Elkind, a sport management major, earned Pac-10 All-Academic second team honors for the first time in her Cougar career with a 3.76 GPA. She was named a 2005-06 Top 50 USAA Collegiate All-American Scholar Athlete and a Pac-10 All-Academic honorable mention last season. Elkind, a native of Encinitas, Calif., appeared in all 20 matches in the Cougar midfield in 2006.

Miller's 2006 Pac-10 All-Academic second team honors are the first in her WSU career. The 2006 co-captain earned honorable mention accolades in 2005 and was also selected as a 2005-06 Top 50 USAA Collegiate All-American Scholar Athlete. The sport management major carries a 3.60 GPA and scored two goals for the Cougars who finished 4-3-2 in conference play.

Five Cougars earned Pac-10 All-Academic honorable mention accolades including seniors Sasha Baines and Angela Fajardo. The award is Baines' first while Fajardo was recognized for the third consecutive year. The seniors recorded one goal each for the Cougars in 2006.

Juniors Brynn Bemis, Kim Bonnes and Allison Scurich were each named honorable mentions as well. It is the first award for both Bemis and Bonnes and the second for Scurich. Bonnes notched two game-winning goals for WSU while Scurich anchored a Cougar defensive line that tied the school record for shutouts with ten. Junior goalkeeper Bemis recorded seven solo shutouts, tying her for second place in the Cougar single season record books and ranked 18th nationally at the end of the season with an 0.868 save percentage.

To be eligible for selection to the academic team, a student-athlete must have a minimum 3.0 overall GPA and be either a starter or significant contributor.
