LONG BEACH, Calif. - Washington State scored five times in the top of the ninth inning to rally for an 8-5 victory over Long Beach State in nonconference baseball at Blair Field, Saturday.
Washington State (5-8) senior Alex Burg led off the ninth inning with a single off Long Beach State (4-9) reliever Dustin Rasco. After a wild pitch, Burg advanced to third on a single by sophomore Matt Argyropoulos that ended Rasco's outing.
Junior Michael Weber greeted 49ers' closer Charlie Ruiz (1-1) with a double that made the score 5-4 and sophomore pinch hitter John Desmarais was intentionally walked to load the bases with no one out. One out later, a passed ball by 49ers' catcher John Hill allowed all three runners to move up and tie the game 5-5.
Freshman Patrick Claussen struck out, but reached first base on a wild pitch to load the bases for the second time in the inning. After sophomore Shea Vucinich struck out, freshman Derek Jones struck out, but Hill's second passed ball of the inning allowed Jones to reach and Weber to score the go-ahead run. Senior Greg Lagreid, who finished with three hits and three RBI, capped the rally with a two-run single.
WSU took a 1-0 lead in the first after Vucinich and Jones singled and Lagreid delivered a sacrifice fly to center. In the fourth, Jones and Lagreid singled to open the inning. Jones moved to third on a fly out by Burg and scored when Argyropoulos singled. Weber walked to load the bases and one out later redshirt-sophomore Cody Bartlett singled home a run to put WSU on top 3-0.
The 49ers tallied twice in the bottom of the fourth on a pair of singles wrapped around a walk with one out and a balk with two outs to cut their deficit to 3-2.
Long Beach State tied the game in the fifth. A double and a hit batter with one out chased WSU senior starting pitcher Jared Prince. Johnson came in from the bullpen and hit a batter to load the bases before yielding a sacrifice fly that tied the game 3-3.
The 49ers took the lead with a two-out, RBI-single in the sixth and added a run to go up 5-3 in the seventh when Argyropoulos committed a two-out error at third base.
