PULLMAN, Wash. - The Washington State women's swimming team will make its annual Labor Day trek to the Snake River to participate in the Snake River Challenge Monday, Sept. 4, at 11 a.m.

The event consists of a two-mile swim from Granite Point to the WSU Boathouse followed by a two-mile run back to Granite Point.

"This event brings our team together each year," said Head Coach Erica Quam. "It is tough, both mentally and physically, which is what we have to be to continue to improve as a team. By the end of the race, as each person runs to that finish line, they have their teammates there cheering them across to the end."

The team competes against each other for fastest swim time, fastest run time and fastest time overall in the event. The WSU Master's Swim Team coached by Doug Garcia will also have participants in the event.

The Snake River Challenge is a time honored tradition for the Cougar swim team and Washington State fans and alumni are encouraged to attend.

"We had some fans show up last year with a "Go Cougs" sign," said Quam. "That was so motivating for each person to see at the end of a 2.2 mile swim before they headed back to granite point on foot."

The Cougar swim team opens their 2006 season at Idaho Friday, Sept. 29. Meet time is scheduled for 6 p.m.
