Final Stats

PULLMAN, Wash. - Bookie Gates collected four hits and Justin Hart hit a grand slam home run Thursday as Washington State unleashed a 17-hit attack in handing visiting Pace University 13-4 loss in WSU's Bailey-Brayton Field home opener.

Hart, who also collected a pair of doubles and drove home five runs, blasted his bases-loaded home run in the third inning, staking his Cougar team to an 11-1 advantage.

Cougar starter Eddie Bonine (4-4) took advantage of WSU's (11-15) fast start offensively two runs in the first inning, four in the second and six in the third for a 12-1 lead, throwing six innings while striking out six and walking just two. Zach Fisher threw the final three innings for WSU, allowing just one hit in recording his first save of the season.

Pace (2-12) starter Jared Monti (0-3) took the loss for the Setters, working into the third inning before giving way to Dan Macom. Brad Jones threw the final inning for Pace.

The visitors from Pleasantville, New York, collected 10 hits, but only once, in the fifth inning when they scored twice, did they have three hits in an inning. Dan Iorio put the Setters on the scoreboard in the third with a lead-off solo home run to right center, taking advantage of a strong wind that helped all of the long balls.

In the fourth, Pace added an unearned run, then scored their final two runs in the fifth when Marc DeLuca singled home Steve Martino and Shelby Langford.

The Cougars opened the scoring in the first on Gates' run-scoring single. The Cougar second baseman later scored on a balk. In the second, Evan Hecker hit his first home run of the season, a two-run shot to right center. Gates also had a run-scoring single later in the inning.

In addition to Hart's grand slam in the third, Collin Henderson pushed across one run with a single. WSU scored its final run in the fourth inning on Hart's double that scored Chris Todd.

The same two teams will complete their series Friday with a noon doubleheader also slated for Bailey-Brayton Field on the WSU campus.
