COLORADO SPRINGS, Colo. - - Senior Erin Eldridge set a 100 yard breaststroke pool record and teammates Kelley Miedema, Eli Schmied and Suzie Muirhead swept the 100 backstroke in competition with Louisiana State at Colorado College Monday.

In dual meet scoring, LSU edged past the Cougars 53-39 and thumped Colorado College 102-39. Competition between the Cougars and the host school was not scored.

"I am excited to be competitive with the 25th ranked LSU Tigers," Cougar coach Rocco Aceto commented after watching his squad push the Tiger swimmers in nearly every event. "We won two events and lost a couple of closes races. Certainly our program has come a long way," he added.

Eldridge, an All-American for the Cougars the past two years, was clocked in 1:04.56 to top all swimmers in the 100 yard breaststroke. Teammate Rachelle Carano, a freshman, captured second place in the event to give WSU a sweep over the Tigers.

"It was really exciting to go up against LSU," Carano said. "Our team really came together and supported each other throughout the entire meet."

Miedema, also a senior, led the Cougar parade in the 100 yard backstroke with a 1:00.35 clocking. She was followed to the finish by teammates Schmied, second at 1:04.51, and Muirhead, third at 1:05.99.

The Cougars also captured the final women's event, the 400 yard freestyle relay, when the team of Rebecca Cohen, Gretchen Chambers, Sara Schmied and sister Eli were timed in 3:45.40.

Lindsay Henahan, also a Cougar freshman, picked up a share of a first place win when she and LSU's Julie Hughes recorded identical :24.83 times in the 50 freestyle.

"In all of our races, we noticed the improvement in our technical details, such as starts and turns," commented Melissa Hubley, who also had a busy meet with competition in 100 butterfly and the 500 freestyle. She was WSU's top finisher in the butterfly at :58.53 to finish third.
