Box Score

LAS VEGAS - Senior Jim Murphy tied a career high with four hits and Washington State overcame an 8-0 deficit to post a 12-8 victory at UNLV in nonconference baseball, Tuesday night.

Murphy tied the WSU school record with two triples and added a pair of doubles to lead a 16-hit attack. The Cougars tallied a single run in the fourth inning then erupted for eight runs in the top of the sixth to take a 9-8 lead. WSU tacked on two runs in the seventh inning and one in the eighth to put the game away.

"It takes a lot of courage to come from behind like that and we didn't panic," WSU Head Coach Donnie Marbut said. "We tried to put the first inning behind us and win every inning after that. The next thing you know we played eight good innings of baseball."

Murphy and Michael Weber opened the sixth inning with back-to-back triples to cut UNLV's lead to 8-2. Greg Lagreid delivered a sacrifice fly and Simi Reynolds grounded out to make the score 8-3 with two outs and the bases empty.

The Cougars loaded the bases on a single by Shea Vucinich, Travis Coulter's hit by pitch and a walk to John Desmarais. Paul Gran followed with a three-run triple to trim the deficit to 8-6 and raise his team-leading RBI total to 10. Jared Prince's single plated Gran to make it 8-7, then Murphy drilled his second triple in the inning to score Prince and Murphy came into score when the relay throw to third sailed high.

"Murphy came up big for us tonight," Marbut said. "We are hitting the ball really well right now, but we will not survive the season if we do not start games better, get better starting pitching and catch the ball better."

The Cougars (3-1) overcame their largest deficit to win since March 30, 2001 when they rallied from 10-0 down to defeat UCLA 12-11 in Pullman.

UNLV (2-2) took an 8-0 lead in the first inning and chased Cougar starter Connor Lambert who recorded only one out. The Cougar defense did not help committing three errors leading to six unearned runs in the frame.

Michael Ratigan (2-0) came in to relieve Lambert and logged four and two-thirds innings of shutout relief to earn the victory. Andrew Davis, Seth Harvey and Ross Humes combined to blank the Rebels over the final four frames.

The teams continue their two-game series Wednesday at 6:30 p.m.
