Box Score

LOS ANGELES, Calif. -- - Michael Moon hit for the cycle and Anthony Reyes limited Washington State to six hits as the USC Trojans picked up a 6-1 win over WSU Saturday in a Pacific-10 Conference baseball game at Dedeaux Field.

Reyes (2-3) struck out seven and walked just two in recording all but the final out of the game as USC (27-24 overall, 10-10 Pacific-10 Conference) evened up the series with WSU. Brett Butler took over for Reyes in the ninth with the bases loaded and struck out Derek Bruce.

WSU (18-34, 6-14) starting pitcher Aaron MacKenzie (4-5) took the loss, with Billy Gorrell finishing up and recording the final four outs. MacKenzie struck out six and walked seven, but was touched for 11 hits.

Moon did most of the damage for USC, tripling to lead off USC's half of the first inning, belting a solo home run in the second, singling in the fifth and then doubling to right field in the seventh. He scored three times along with his one RBI. Jon Brewster, USC's designated hitter, had three hits, all singles, and drove home three runs.

WSU managed six hits off Reyes, including Derek Bruce's sixth home run of the season, a one-out blast to center field in the eighth inning. WSU did not leave a runner on base through the first five innings. Justin Hart was WSU's only runner in those first five frames. He opened the game with a single but was caught trying to seat second. In the fourth he opened the inning with a walk and then was wiped out on a double play grounder off the bat of Jeremy Farrar.

Other than Bruce's home run, WSU's best chance to score came in the final inning when Jay Miller singled to third with two outs. Jeff LaRue, pinch hitting for Grant Richardson, then singled to first base and Wes Falkenborg walked to load the bases. Butler then took over for Reyes and stopped the Cougar rally.

USC scored all the runs they needed in the first inning off a double by Anthony Lunetta and Brewster's single. USC then took a 3-0 lead in the second on Moon's sixth home run of the season. In the fifth Brewster drove home two more USC runs with a single to left field. The Trojan's final run came in the seventh when Moon doubled and scored on Lunetta's single to right field.

The two teams conclude their three-game series Sunday.
