PULLMAN, Wash. --- The Washington State soccer program added defender Ashley Smith to the list of incoming freshmen, head coach Dan Tobias announced Tuesday.

Smith attended Las Cruces High School in New Mexico last season, where she captained the Bulldogs during the 2000 and 2001 seasons. She was a three-time All-District selection and was named All-State as a senior.

"We are excited to add a student-athlete of Ashley's caliber at this point in the recruiting process," Tobias said. "We are excited that Ashley is going to spend her career as a student-athlete with the Cougars. We anticipate her being a big part of our success."

Smith also captained the 2002 state champion Rio FC club team, coached by Pete Clinch, and will become just the second player from the state of New Mexico to join the Cougar soccer program.
