Final Stats

PULLMAN, Wash. - Washington State pounded out 14 hits but could not overcome two big innings by visiting Lewis-Clark State in a 13-8 baseball loss Sunday afternoon at Bailey-Brayton Field.

Brandon Hundt (6-6) received the loss for the Cougars. Hundt pitched four innings, allowing eight hits and 11 runs. Kevin Welch (4-1) notched the win in relief for the Warriors, throwing five innings and surrendering four hits and one unearned run.

The loss dropped WSU to 19-28 on the season, while LCSC improved to 35-15. The Warriors win was their first of the season against the Cougars.

At the plate, several Cougar seniors had huge roles on Senior Day. Evan Hecker and Bookie Gates each had three hits, while Tyson Boston and Brent Robertson each hit home runs in the fourth inning. Robertson led off the inning with a solo home run, his first of the season, over the left field wall. Boston hit his third home run of the season, a two-run shot three batters later.

WSU got to Warrior starter Andy Torres early, scoring four runs in the bottom of the first inning.

Boston's RBI single to left field plated Hecker to begin the scoring. Mortimer then singled to right field three batters later, scoring Derek Bruce and Boston. Jon Baeder followed by bringing home Mortimer with a single to right field.

LCSC answered with six runs in the top of the second, taking a 6-4 lead, before WSU regained the lead in the bottom of the fourth with three runs. Micah Furtado hit his tenth home run of the season, a grand slam, to lead the Warriors big inning.

Robertson hit his homer to begin the inning and Boston capped the scoring with a two-run shot to right center field that scored Gates.

The Warriors, however, tacked on five runs in the top of the fifth to take an 11-7 advantage.

WSU scored once more in the bottom of the fifth on a fielder's choice which plated Bruce, cutting the Cougar deficit to 11-8.

LCSC then scored single runs in the seventh and ninth and Welch allowed just four hits in the final four innings to record the win for the Warriors.

The two teams complete their season series Monday night at 6:30 p.m. at Harris Field in Lewiston.
