Coto de Caza, Calif.--- Despite a third-round 72 by Matt McGeeney (San Pedro, Calif.), Washington State was unable to gain any ground on tournament champion University of Washington at the Spalding/ Anteater Invitational.

McGeeney, a redshirt freshman, was 81st after the first day of play but jumped up 29 spots to tie two other teammates for 52nd. Sophomores Jon Reehoorn (Burlington, Wash.) and Jeremy Taylor (West Richland, Wash.) both shot three-round 230s to stay on pace with McGeeney. Senior Eric Toomey (Snohomish, Wash.) shot solid first and third rounds at 74 and 76, but a second round prevented him from finishing any higher than 64th.

Two Pac-10 teams battled for the overall title wire-to-wire. Washington emerged victorious over Stanford by six strokes, while a third Pac-10 team, UCLA, surged on day two with a 290 and placed third. UC-Irvine, the tournament host, placed fourth, 14 strokes off the lead.

UCLA's Brandon DiTullio grabbed the lead after the first round and never let go. He fired a three-under par 213, beating North Texas' Les Philips by four strokes. Washington's Gordy Scutt and UTEP's Simon Buckle tied for third.

Washington State is in the midst of a 10-day road-trip thats stops off next at the nation's second oldest college tournament, the Border Olympics in Laredo, Tex., on April 1-2.
