Box Score

YAKIMA, Wash. - The Washington State baseball team scored nine runs in the final five innings to battle back from an early eight-run deficit against Oregon State, but it was not enough as the Beavers escaped with an 11-10 win Saturday afternoon at Yakima Valley CC.

Cougar shortstop Aaron Smith singled in Brent Robertson after Robertson led off the ninth with a double, giving WSU one last hope for a win or at least extra innings. However, Smith was retired when he was caught stealing, and OSU reliever Stephen Copeland struck out the final two batters of the inning to secure the win for the Beavers.

"I am really proud how the team battled back," said WSU head coach Tim Mooney. "Aaron Smith and Garrett Alwert gave us big hits, but right now I'm just proud at how well the team came back."

The Beavers once again jumped on top early, scoring four runs off WSU starter Justin Cayetano through the first three innings. Cougar designated hitter Tyson Boston scored in the third due to a Oregon State error, but OSU scored five more runs in the fifth, including two-run homers by Beaver first baseman Andy Jarvis and left fielder Chris Biles off WSU reliever Tyson Thompson to stretch the lead to 9-1.

Lanakila Niles relieved Thompson in the fifth and pitched well in his third appearance of the season, giving up two runs on seven hits and only one walk.

In the bottom of the fifth, the Cougars chipped away at the Beaver lead as first baseman Stefan Bailie drove in Jon Baeder with the bases loaded, and Bookie Gates drove in Mike Knight and Bailie in the next at-bat to cut the lead to OSU's lead to five runs. Gates later scored when Richard Hall reached on another Beaver error to make it a 9-5 ballgame.

After the Beavers scored two more in the seventh, Bailie hit his ninth home run of the season off OSU reliever Chris Wilkins to lead off the Cougars' half of the inning. In the eighth, Knight drove in Alwert with a sacrifice fly to continue the WSU comeback, and Bailie drove in two more runs with a double, slicing OSU's lead to two runs 11-9.

The final game of the weekend series between the two teams will be Sunday at Parker Field starting at 12 p.m.
