CORVALLIS, Ore. -- The No. 24 ranked Oregon State Beavers swept a doubleheader against the Washington State Cougars 12-2 and 7-4 Saturday afternoon in Pac-10 North action at Coleman Field.

With the two wins, the Beavers (30-11-1, 13-6) are now tied with the University of Washington atop the Pac-10 North standings and pulled two games ahead of the Cougars (22-19, 11-8), who are now all alone in third place.

In the first game the Beavers sent their ace Andrew Checketts (10-1) to the mound and he picked up his league-leading 10th victory of the season. Checketts threw a seven inning complete game allowing only two runs off seven Cougar hits. The senior, who played one season at the University of Florida, struck out eight while walking just one.

OSU's Jason Stranberg was the only Beaver to pick up more than one hit. He was 2-for-3 with two runs scored. The Beavers bounced back from leaving 18 men on base in the nightcap of Friday's doubleheader to leave only six men on in this game.

Dave Wheeler (2-3) started on the mound for the Cougs and pitched well for the first three innings. The junior out of Spokane has been experiencing control problems as of late and this game proved to be no different. Wheeler walked eight batters in four plus innings of work and gave up 12 runs, seven earned. The Beavers scored their 12 runs off only seven hits, but two costly WSU errors accounted for the five unearned runs.

Robin Guiver finished up in relief of Wheeler and continued to look impressive. The JC transfer from Felton, Calif. pitched one and one-thirds innings and did not give up a run. His season ERA has dropped to 6.38.

The game really started as a pitchers' duel with Wheeler matching Checketts through the first three innings. In the fourth the floodgates opened and the Cougs saw their fate sink with a seven-run Oregon State rally. In the fourth Colley connected on a three-run home run to push Oregon State's lead to 7-0. The Beavers added five more in the fifth to put the game out of reach.

The Cougs scored both their runs in the top of the fifth with Steve Gleason and Scott Randall picking up the RBIs. Randall and Gleason each recorded two hits apiece.

The nightcap featured a pitchers' duel between Washington State's Todd Meldahl and Brody Percell. Meldahl (4-5) pitched well enough to deserve the victory, but an eighth inning rally by the Beavers wouldn't allow it. Meldahl gave up three runs after three innings of work, before settling down to shut the OSU line up down between the fourth and eighth innings. The sophomore from Butte, Mont. gave up four earned runs off 10 OSU hits while lasting seven plus innings. A four-run eighth inning boosted the Beavers to a doubleheader sweep.

Brody Percell left the game in the eighth inning with his team down 4-3 and ended up taking the no-decision. The left-handed senior struck out nine Cougars in his seven plus innings of work. He gave up four runs while WSU collected nine hits.

Mike Boire (3-0) finished up for Percell and allowed only one hit in his appearance. Boire pitched the final two outs of the eighth and then put the cougs down in order in the ninth to pick up the win. Stranberg, Colley, Troy Schader, Matt Bailie, and Corrie Willkie each recorded two hits for the Beavers as they hit the 30 win mark for the third season in a row.

Second baseman Boyd Robertson led the Cougar hitting attack with a 3-for-4 nightcap, raising his season average to .281. Randall provided a clutch two-run triple in the top of the seventh to finish off a three-run Cougar rally. Outfielder Dusty Edler was a perfect 3-for-3 on the afternoon with one run scored. Edler is now 7-for-14 in Pac-10 North play. Ray Hattenburg added two hits.

Washington State was down 3-1 entering the seventh before they rallied for three runs to take a 4-3 lead. Edler led things off with a double down the left field line and later scored on a pinch-hit single by Greg Mitchell. After a single by Boyd Robertson, Randall drilled a pitch to right center for a two-run triple.

The Beavers re-claimed the lead in the eighth, scoring two runs off both Meldahl and reliever Reggie Rivard. The Cougs could only muster one hit off Boire and they were sat down silently in the ninth as they fell two games off the lead in the Pac-10 North.

A win tomorrow and a sweep of Portland State is a must for the Cougars to keep their division title hopes alive. Jamaal Gaines (2-4) will open for the Cougs in the 1 p.m. rubber match of the five-game series. The game will be taped by Fox Sports Northwest and will be replayed on Monday at 1 p.m.
