PULLMAN, Wash. - California reliever Matt Gorgen balked in the winning run in the bottom of the 10th inning and No. 25 Washington State defeated the 12th-ranked Golden Bears 5-4 in a Pacific-10 baseball game at Bailey-Brayton Field, Saturday.

With the scored tied 4-4, Jim Murphy led off the WSU (14-7, 1-2 Pac-10) 10th with a walk and was replaced at first base by pinch runner Matt Fanelli. Jared Prince followed with a sacrifice bunt and Garry Kuykendall's ground out moved Fanelli to third with two outs.

With the count 1-1 to Cougar shortstop Shea Vucinich, Gorgen (0-1) was in the wind up position and flinched prior to starting his motion resulting in a balk that allowed Fanelli to come home with the winning run.

Matt Way (1-1) earned the victory on the mound for the Cougars working six innings of one-run ball. He allowed five hits, walked one and tied his career high with seven strikeouts.

"Matt Way was awesome," Cougar Head Coach Donnie Marbut said. "He is one of our best arms and we have to figure out the role that is best for him."

The Cougars took a 1-0 lead in the first inning on a two-out, RBI-single by Jared Prince. California (15-4-1, 2-1 Pac-10) tied the game in the top of the second on a leadoff home run by Josh Satin.

In the bottom of the third, Michael Weber led off with a double and scored on Paul Gran's one-out single to put WSU on top 2-1. California tallied two in the fourth to take a 3-2 lead on run-scoring singles by Rich Gorman and Michael Brady off Cougar started Ross Humes.

WSU regained the lead in its half of the fourth on a two-out, two-run-single by Greg Lagreid. The Golden Bears tied the game at 4 in the seventh on a two-out double by David Cooper and a RBI-single by Satin.

The Cougars conclude their four-game homestand hosting Gonzaga, Tuesday, March 25 at 5:30 p.m.
