BERKELEY, Calif. - The California Bears gave new meaning to a fast start, scoring all their runs in the opening inning in a 10-1 win over the visiting Washington State Cougars Sunday at Evans Diamond.
Cougar starter Zach Fisher (0-4) took the loss for the Cougars (10-17 overall, 2-1 Pacific-10), who won the two previous games with California.
Jason Dennis (2-1) picked up the win for California (15-13, 2-4), working six innings of four-hit, one-run ball. Andrew Sproul and Eli Stokols finished up on the mound for the Bears, who belted 12 hits off four Cougar pitchers. Brad Smith and Brian Horwitz led the fireworks for the Bears with three hits each.
Fisher never made it out of the first inning, surrendering six straight hits before Tony Auckland came on in relief. Tyson Thompson also tried his luck in the first inning before Garrett Alwert finally shut the Bears down. In all California had nine hits in the opening inning, including doubles by Clint Hoover and Horwitz and a triple off the bat of Connor Jackson.
Alwert, who recorded the final out of the first inning, went the rest of the way for WSU in his best outing of the season, giving up just three hits in 7.1 innings. He also struck out five and did not issue a walk.
The Cougars only run came in the sixth when Richard Hall singled to lead off the inning and came home on Stefan Bailie's fly out to center.
Tyson Boston collected the first of WSU's five hits, a single with two out in the fourth inning. Other than the sixth inning, WSU did not move a runner past second base.
The Cougars now prepare to host the UCLA Bruins in WSU's home opener, with single games slated for Friday, Saturday and Sunday at Bailey-Brayton Field.
