WESTWOOD, Calif. -- The Washington State University volleyball team fell in three games to No. 21 UCLA Friday night at Pauley Pavilion in game scores of 30-17, 30-24, and 30-26.
UCLA (15-8, 7-6 Pac-10) was led by the 16 kills of Kaitlin Sather as Katie Carter added 14 and Nancy Barba another 13 kills. Freshman Nellie Spicer had 48 assists and Jordan Smith had 10 digs. Nana Meriwether, the conference blocks leader, had seven blocks.
Jen Barcus was the only Cougar in double figures with 10 kills. Te'Ara Epps had a match-high eight blocks while Barcus added six blocks and Natalia Owens another five. Maureen Perez handled the setting duties with 23 assists but no Coug had more than six digs. WSU (8-19, 1-13) out-blocked UCLA 12.5 to 10 but the Bruins out-hit the Cougs .274 to .098.
"We serve-received the ball very well as a team tonight, especially Jalen Pendon who really did a phenomenal job not only handling the job but really helping other passers communicating and covering things," Cougar Head Coach Brian Heffernan said. "Unfortunately we just couldn't terminate the ball as well as we really needed to beat the UCLA defense.
In the first game 30-17 UCLA win, the Bruins hit .200 but held the Cougars to a -.148 team hitting percentage.
WSU took a 10-6 early lead in the second game only to have UCLA come back to take a 12-10 lead. Cougars battled back to tie the game at 17 points and stayed within three points of the Bruins until the final 30-24 score.
The third game was tied at 17, and again at 20 when the Cougars outscored UCLA three to one to take a 23-21 lead. The Bruins battled back to tie it up at 23. A Barcus kill countered a kill from Barba when Sather hit long for WSU to go up 25-24. UCLA went on to outscore the Cougars for the 30-26 win.
