HUNTSVILLE, Texas - Washington State's Kevin Chen was as hot as the Texas weather Monday as the freshman fired a school record 8-under 64 in the final round of the Sam Houston Classic at the par 72, 6,943 yard Raven's Nest Golf Club.
Chen, whose 64 was the tournament's low score in the 93-person field, finished the 54-hole event at 4-under 212. Chen ended the event tied for fifth, marking a season-best finish for the Alamo, Calif., native.
Chen's record-setting round included seven birdies and an eagle. He eclipsed the school's previous record score of 65, which was set on three occasions by three different players (Jeremy Champoux, Dustin White and Ryan Camp). In addition, Chen's score bettered the Raven's Nest course record by one stroke, which had been set by the course pro.
"Kevin has been hitting the ball really well but he hasn't been scoring that well," WSU Head Coach Walt Williams said. "His round was a surprise and a pleasant one. The whole team is very excited for him."
As a team, the Cougars finished sixth with a three-round score of 888, five shots behind fifth place Stephen F. Austin.
Red shirt freshman Jordan Madison finished tied for 19th with a total of 221 (+5). Madison has recorded a top 25 finish in seven of eight tournaments this season.
Competing as an individual, freshman Logan Toskey tied for 26th with a score of 223 while sophomore Chad Carlson tied for 39th at 226. Senior Ryan Camp and junior Ben Bryson each tied for 54th and freshman Matt Fladwood rounded out the Cougar contingent with a tie for 86th position.
The final 36 holes of the 54-hole tournament were played Monday. Two rounds were scheduled for Sunday but rain cut short the first day's action to 18 holes.
WSU returns to action at the Duck Invitational in Eugene, Ore., March 22-23.
