COUGARS OPEN OUTDOOR SEASON AT TUCSON: The Washington State University men's and women's track and field teams will compete in the first outdoor meet of the season this weekend...the Cougars will travel 16 men and 16 women to the 21st Annual Willie Williams Classic at the Roy P. Drachman Stadium on the University of Arizona campus...it is a two-day, non-scoring meet...a large high school competition runs concurrently with the collegiate meet...men's javelin opens the Friday events at 4 p.m. with the concluding event, the men's 5000m slated to begin at 9 p.m...Saturday's events begin at 10 a.m. and finish with the men's 4x400m relay at 2:30 p.m. (all times Arizona Time)......results will be posted on the WSU Athletics website, www.wsucougars.com, when available after competition concludes each evening...some Cougar competitors will also be participating in the Spokane Community College Dusty Lane Invite.

EMPHASIS ON OUTDOOR EVENTS: The Williams Classic Meet will find Cougars competing in events not contested during the indoor season...WSU will have both men and women entries in the 3000m steeplechase, 400m hurdles, discus, javelin, and hammer.

NO QUALIFYING MARKS FOR PAC-10 CHAMPIONSHIPS: This is the first year the Pacific-10 Conference will forego its own set of qualifying marks for entrance into its championships meet...instead, a maximum of 24 women and 24 men may be entered in the conference championships meet at each head coach's discretion...best marks from the outdoor season will be used to construct descending order lists, and the Pac-10 will allow the use of indoor marks for seeding into the championship heats/flights.

ABOUT THE COUGAR COACHES: Head coach Rick Sloan is in his 32nd season with the Cougar track program; 11th year as a head coach, 10th year as mentor to the combined men's and women's program...he is joined by associate coach Debra Farwell, and assistant coaches Jason Drake (Head Coach Cross Country), Kris Grimes, Mark Macdonald, and Ellannee Richardson...volunteer coaches are Michael Friedberg, Matt McGee and Andrea Thornton.

COUGARS AT NCAA INDOOR CHAMPIONSHIPS: Diana Pickler (redshirt sophomore, Sachse, Texas) came away with an All-America certificate after placing 10th in the pentathlon (4000 points)...Tamara Diles (junior, Bellevue, Wash.) finished ninth in the women's pole vault (4.10m/13-5 1/4i)...Tyson Byers (redshirt sophomore, Spokane Valley, Wash.) finished in 10th place in the men's pole vault (5.30m/17-4 1/2i)...Darion Powell (junior, Kirkland, Wash.) had a no height in the high jump and dropped out of the heptathlon after the first-day, while Julie Pickler (redshirt sophomore, Sachse, Texas) had three fouls in the long jump and dropped out of the pentathlon.

NATIONAL POLLS: The Team Power Rankings is a unique system of ranking teams on the basis of quality of athletic performance, team depth, and dual meet scoring potential...the WSU men are 21st and the Cougar women are 21st (3/5/05).
