TUCSON, Ariz. - Collin Henderson collected four hits and drove home four runs in leading Washington State past the Arizona Wildcats 9-7 in a Pacific-10 Conference baseball game Sunday afternoon at Sancet Field.
For the third straight game between the two teams, the winning team scored three runs in the ninth inning to come from behind and record the win. Friday WSU scored three runs in the ninth for a 6-5 win. Arizona did the same Saturday for an 8-7 win. This time it was WSU's turn.
Jamin Svendsen (2-1) picked up the win for WSU (21-30 overall, 6-15 Pacific-10), allowing just two hits while recording the last four outs. Bryce Chamberlin worked into the seventh, allowing four hits and four runs. Josh Bartlome then took over and was touched for four hits and three runs before Svendsen came on with two out in the eighth.
Brian Anderson (0-2), the fourth Arizona (30-22, 8-13) pitcher to take the mound, took the loss. Marc Kaiser started for Arizona and was roughed up for 10 hits and four runs before giving way to Jason Snyder in the seventh. Wes Zlotoff also saw mound action for Arizona, closing out the eighth before giving way to Anderson in the ninth.
Henderson's big blow was a bases loaded double that scored three runs in the ninth, pulling WSU from one run down to a 9-7 lead.
Wes Falkenborg started the ninth inning comeback with a single and moved to second on a groundout by Derek Bruce. Next Steve Mortimer and Tyson Boston both drew walks to load the bases. Robert Stahlke, who singled and scored in the eighth, struck out this time, setting the stage for Henderson, who already had two singles and a double. He picked up his second double, this one to right field, and all three runners scored.
Henderson also drove home WSU's first run with a third-inning single. In the fifth the Cougars scored two more runs, one on Justin Hart's single and the other on a fielding error by the Arizona centerfielder.
WSU also scored once in the seventh on Bookie Gates' sacrifice fly that brought home Jon Baeder, then added two more in the eighth on Hart's sacrifice fly and a single by Gates.
Meanwhile Brad Hassey's home run in the sixth started Arizona's scoring, cutting WSU's lead to 3-1. In the seventh, the Wildcats scored four times, although two of the runs were unearned. Kaiser helped his own cause with a two-run double and Hardy singled home another Arizona run as the Wildcats took a 5-4 lead.
Arizona matched WSU's two runs in the eighth, thanks to Kaiser's two-run home run with two out. That's when Cougar coach Tim Mooney called on Svendsen and the right hander recorded the third out, then shut down the host club in the ninth to pick up the win.
WSU closes out the season next weekend with a three-game series at Stanford.
