Box Score

PULLMAN, Wash. - Freshman John Desmarais collected three hits and three RBI to lead a 16-hit attack to lead Washington State to a 14-10 victory over Wright State in nonconference baseball at Bailey-Brayton Field, Saturday.

The victory was the sixth-straight for the Cougars (6-1) who have amassed 68 hits in their last four-games, their best mark in a four-game span since Feb. 13-19, 1999 (70).

"Offensively, I thought we were better today than yesterday," WSU Head Coach Donnie Marbut said. "We had fewer strikeouts and really competed hard. Jayson Miller was strong the mound throwing a lot of strikes. They really wasn't a ball hit hard off of him."

Washington State fell behind 5-2 after two and half innings before scoring in each inning from the third through the eighth.

Freshman Matt Argyropoulos started the comeback with a sacrifice fly in the third. Freshman Riley Tubbs, making his first, homered leading off the fourth to cut the Wright State (0-5) lead to 5-4. Two batters, Desmarais tied the game with his first long ball of the season.

After the Raiders retook the lead with a run in the top of the fifth, the Cougars responded with a pair of the runs in their half of the frame to gain a 7-6 lead. Freshman Garry Kuykendall delivered a pinch-hit RBI-single and senior Scott Suttmeier scored on a wild pitch in the inning.

Senior Jim Murphy increased the WSU lead to 9-6 with a two-run home run to center field in the sixth inning. Wright State closed within 9-8 in the top of the seventh on a two-run home run Gerald Ogrinc. Desmarais got one of the runs back with a RBI-fielder's choice in the bottom of the seventh.

The Cougars completed their scoring with a four-run eighth. Suttmeier knocked in two with a single, Desmarais added a run-scoring single and junior Travis Coulter drew a bases loaded walk.

Washington State and Wright State conclude their three-game series Sunday with first pitch scheduled at noon.
