Varsity Eight Takes Third at San Diego Crew Classic

SAN DIEGO - In the race for the prestigious Jessop-Whittier Cup, the WSU varsity eight finished third in the grand final Sunday with a time of 6:26.10, just four seconds behind first place Washington and three seconds behind second place USC. The Cougars finished ahead of Pacific-10 opponents Stanford and UCLA.

The second varsity eight placed third in the Hungness Trophy final Sunday with a time of 6:41.97. The crew finished the course behind Washington and USC and ahead of Clemson, Stanford and UCLA.

The novice eight won the Korholz Perpetual Trophy crossing the finish line in a time of 7:03.90. The crew defeated SDSU, Washington, UCD, USC, and OCC.

"It was a good weekend," head coach Jane LaRiviere said. "We look forward to taking on the rest of the season."

The Cougars will cross the state next weekend to take on Pacific-10 rivals Washington.
