This Week: The Cougar swim team travels to Denver, Colo. for a week-long winter training camp...WSU will depart Pullman Saturday, Dec. 30 and return Saturday, Jan. 6...while in Denver, the Cougars will face Metropolitan College of Denver in a dual meet Saturday, Jan. 5 at 12:00 p.m. PT.
Last Time: 12 Cougar swimmers were selected to participate in the Texas Invitational hosted by the University of Texas in Austin...WSU placed ninth overall amongst some of the top teams in the nation...senior Erin McCleave paced all WSU swimmers with six top-10 finishes and six NCAA "B" Consideration Standard times...McCleave also recorded a WSU record in the finals of the 100 freestyle with a time of 50.40...Elyse Peterson earned two NCAA "B" Consideration times in both the 100 and 200 breaststroke.
Winter Training Begins Saturday: The WSU swim team will train at Denver University before heading to the Olympic Training Center in Colorado Springs...the Cougars will then face Metropolitan College of Denver in a dual meet Jan. 5 before returning to Pullman.
Head Coach Erica Quam Says: "This is a great opportunity for our team to get a change of scenery, to come together as a group, and focus in for a period of intense training. We are looking forward to utilizing two great facilities, getting in both long course and short course workouts at altitude. We will begin our training in Denver to acclimate there for several days before moving up to Colorado Springs and the Olympic Training Center. We'll finish things off with a competition at Metro Friday, Jan. 5 just to get off the blocks and sharpen up before we head home Saturday, Jan. 6."
Scouting Metropolitan State College of Denver: Most recently, the Roadrunners competed against Nebraska-Kearney and Morningside, losing to both teams...head coach Winthrop Dyer is in his second season with Metro State...the college is a member of the North Central Conference.
Cougars Among Nation's Elite: Washington State currently ranks nationally in 14 events, according to CollegeSwimming.com's latest polls...Erin McCleave is ranked in five individual events, including 13th in the 1650 freestyle (16:33.41)...Elyse Peterson is 34th in the 100 breaststroke (1:03.40) and No. 36 nationally in the 200 breaststroke (2:17.59)...as a team, WSU is 25th in the 800 freestyle relay (7:27.94) and 29th in the 200 medley relay (1:44.06).
Next Up For Washington State: The Cougars resume their dual meet schedule as they host Northern Arizona Saturday, Jan. 13 at 11:00 a.m. at WSU's Gibb Pool.
