STANFORD, Calif. - Stanford ace Jeremy Guthrie threw seven innings of shutout ball as the Stanford Cardinal defeated visiting Washington State 10-0 Friday in a Pacific-10 Conference baseball game at Sunken Diamond.
The win went to Stanford starter Jeremy Guthrie (10-1), who worked seven innings and struck out six while walking one. J.D. Willcox and Darin Naatjes each threw one inning for the Cardinal.
The last time the Cougars were shut out was late last season in a 7-0 setback to the USC Trojans May 13.
The closest WSU came to scoring was the fourth when Bookie Gates singled with one out and Falkenborg, who had two of WSU's eight hits, ripped a double to right center, sending Gates to third. Guthrie then retired Jeff LaRue and Derek Bruce to get out of the jam.
The Cougars also had two runners on base in the fifth with two out, but again Guthrie worked out of the jam.
Stanford had all the runs they needed in the first inning. Cardinal leadoff hitter Chris Carter opened the Stanford first inning with a home run to right center. Later in the inning Chris O'Riordan singled home Stanford's second run.
In the second inning, the Cardinal tallied five runs, three on Ryan Garko's fourteenth home runoff the year. Sam Fuld added a two-run double in the inning.
The two teams continue their three-game series Saturday with a 1 p.m. game.
