LOS ANGELES, Calif. -- Washington State built a 7-0 lead after four innings and fought off a UCLA rally to record a 9-6 win in a Pacific-10 Conference baseball game Sunday at Jackie Robinson Stadium.
The Cougars (17-24 overall, 4-11 in the Pac-10) took their first series win since winning two of three games against Pace University March 28-29. The Bruins fall to 19-25 and 5-7 with the loss.
Brandon Hundt (6-4) notched his second win of the week after defeating Lewis-Clark State Tuesday. Against the Bruins, the junior right-hander went 7 2/3 innings, allowing 11 hits and three earned runs, while striking out eight. Zach Fisher received his second save of the season, allowing no hits and no runs in one inning of work. Chris Cordeiro (1-5) got the loss for the Bruins.
WSU collected 14 hits on the day, led by Justin Hart's three hits. Jeff LaRue, Robert Stahlke, Bruce Jacobsen and Collin Henderson each had two hits apiece. Stahlke also had three RBI, giving him nine for the series. LaRue hit his sixth home run of the season - a solo shot in the top of the third inning.
The Cougars got on the board in the top of the first on a Stahlke RBI single that scored Evan Hecker to give WSU a 1-0 lead.
In the top of the third, the Cougars tallied four runs, taking a 5-0 lead. LaRue led off the inning with a homer to left center field. Derek Bruce and Jon Baeder scored on a throwing error by Bruin left fielder Chris Jensen. Henderson then followed by singling home Jacobsen to cap the scoring in the frame.
WSU added two more runs in the top of the fourth on Stahlke's double to right center field that plated LaRue and Hart, extending the Cougar lead to 7-0.
UCLA responded by scoring runs in the fourth, fifth and seventh innings to cut WSU's lead to 7-3.
The Cougars, however, answered the Bruins with two runs in the eighth. Pinch hitter Bookie Gates scored both WSU runs in the inning on a single to center field that knocked in Tyson Boston and LaRue giving the Cougars a 9-3 lead. WSU had a chance to do more damage with the bases loaded, but Henderson's deep fly ball to left field was caught at the wall by Jensen to end the inning.
UCLA rallied for three runs in its half of the eighth to close to within three, 9-6. But Fisher retired the side in the ninth after replacing Billy Gorrell to record the save.
WSU next hosts Gonzaga in non-conference action Wednesday, May 1 at 6 p.m. at Bailey-Brayton Field.
