LOS ANGELES, Calif -- - Brian Bannister went the distance and limited Washington State to four hits as the USC Trojans captured a 9-1 Pacific-10 Conference baseball victory Sunday at Dedeaux Field. The win was USC's second straight after the Cougars captured the series opener Friday.
Cougar starter James Freeman (0-1) took the loss, with Nick Kenyon throwing the final five innings for WSU (18-35 overall, 6-15 Pacific-10). Freshman Jay Miller led WSU offensively with three of the team's four hits, while Bruce Jacobsen accounted for WSU's only run when he belted his third home run of the season in the third inning.
Bannister (6-5) threw his first complete game of the season for USC (28-24, 11-10), striking out a career high eight batters and issuing just one walk.
Other than Jacobsen's leadoff home run in the third that staked WSU to a short lived 1-0 lead, the Cougars' best chance to score came in the fourth inning. Miller led off the inning with a double and moved to third on Grant Richardson's groundout to second. Derek Bruce then hit a bouncer back to Bannister, who caught Miller off third base and the Cougar runner was then out in a rundown. Bruce moved to second on the rundown, but was stranded there after Steve Mortimer was hit by a pitch and Jon Baeder grounded out to third base.
Miller was the only other WSU runner to reached base over the final five inning. He walked with one out in the sixth, but was wiped out on a double play, while in the ninth he stroked a single to right field, but was stranded as the next two Cougar batters recorded outs.
USC answered WSU's run in the third when Anthony Lunetta hit his sixth home run of the season, a two-run shot to right field. In the fourth the Trojans added four more runs, then scored a single run in the fifth and two more in the eighth inning.
Michael Moon, who hit for the cycle Saturday against WSU, ripped a two-run double in the fourth and Joey Metropoulos had a run-scoring single in the inning. Jason Filarey added a run-producing double in the fifth and back to back hits by Jeff Clement and Metropoulos added the final two runs in USC's last at bat.
The Cougars now return home to host the UCLA Bruins next weekend in the final games of the season. Included in the ceremonies will be the retiring of legendary Cougar head coach Bobo Brayton's #14 prior to the 1:00 p.m. game Saturday. Friday's contest begins at 6:00 p.m. and Sunday's finale at noon.
