LOS ANGELES, Calif. -- - Washington State pushed seven runs across in the fourth inning and then held off the USC Trojans to capture a 13-12 win in the series-opening Pacific-10 Conference baseball game Friday evening at Dedeaux Field.
Garrett Alwert (3-5) picked up the win for WSU (18-33 overall, 6-13 Pac-10), after taking over for starter Bryce Chamberlin in the fourth inning. Brett Betham notched his second save of the year in relief of Alwert in the eighth inning.
USC (26-24, 9-10) starter Bobby Paschal (3-6) took the loss. Three other Trojan pitchers saw action, Jordan Olson, Rudy Quinonez and Josh Rummonds. Freshman catcher Jeff Clement nearly won the game for USC single handedly, belting three home runs, including a grand slam in the fourth inning and a two-run shot in the ninth that pulled the host team to within one run.
The win was WSU's first over the Trojans since a 14-12 victory in Pullman in 1999. Since then USC had won 10 straight from WSU. It was also WSU's first win at USC since a 3-1 decision in 1969.
Jeremy Farrar drove home three Cougar runs with three singles and Jay Miller collected four singles and drove home two runs as WSU recorded 17 hits. Wes Falkenborg, Derek Bruce and Jon Baeder each had two hits and drove home two runs for the Cougars. Baeder had the only extra base hits for WSU, a pair of doubles in WSU's seven-run fourth inning.
Trailing 3-2 going into the fourth, WSU used six hits and sent 11 batters to the plate in the fourth frame, forging a 9-3 lead they never gave up. Baeder led off the inning with a double and later sent two runners home with another two-base hit. In between Jeremy Farrar, Miller and Grant Richardson each had run-scoring singles and Bruce plated two runs with another single.
The Trojans tried to answer WSU's challenge in the fourth, scoring four runs on Clement's 19th home run of the season, a bases loaded blast off Alwert. The Cougar hurler then settled down and retired the side to preserve WSU's lead at 9-7.
The Cougars then pushed across a single run in the fifth when Richardson's sacrifice fly scored Collin Henderson. WSU added three more in the sixth inning to take a 13-7 advantage. Farrar had a two-run single and Miller followed with a run scoring single to account for WSU's three runs.
USC answered WSU's three-run inning by scoring three of their own in the bottom of the sixth. In the ninth Clement again went deep with a two-out, two run shot off Beetham that pulled USC to within one run. The Cougar pitcher then enticed the final Trojan batter to fly out to right field.
Aaron MacKenzie is slated to start for WSU Saturday in the second game of the series.
