Final Stats

LOS ANGELES, Calif. -- Washington State collected 15 hits and had an eight-run fifth inning to defeat UCLA 14-10 Saturday afternoon in a Pacific-10 Conference baseball game at Jackie Robinson Stadium.

Nick Kenyon (1-1) pitched five innings in relief of starter Bryce Chamberlin to record his first win of the season for the Cougars (16-24 overall, 3-11 in the Pac-10). Kenyon allowed four hits and no runs in place of Chamberlin. Wes Whisler (4-2) received the loss for the Bruins (19-25, 5-6).

At the plate, Jeff LaRue was 4-for-5 with three RBI and three runs scored. Robert Stahlke went 3-for-5 with five RBI and also scored three runs.

WSU got on the board first with a three-run top of the first. Evan Hecker scored on a groundout by Wes Falkenborg. Stahlke followed with a single that scored Justin Hart. Derek Bruce then plated Stahlke with a single to left center field.

The Bruins answered in their half of the first with four runs off Chamberlin to take a 4-3 lead. UCLA followed by scoring another run off Chamberlin in the second before Kenyon came in and retired the side, taking a 5-3 lead.

WSU responded by exploding for eight runs in the fifth inning to take an 11-5 advantage.

With the bases loaded, Collin Henderson reached on an error by Bruin shortstop Ryan McCarthy, scoring Bruce and Stahlke. LaRue then lashed a single to center field that plated Henderson and Jon Baeder. Wes Falkenborg followed with a single to centerfield that brought home Hecker. Stahlke capped the scoring in the frame with his first home run of the season - a three-run shot that plated Falkenborg and LaRue.

The Cougars added to their lead with two runs in the seventh on a Falkenborg sacrifice fly that scored Hart and an error by UCLA right fielder Matt Thayer that plated LaRue. WSU also scored a run in the top of the ninth on Jeff LaRue's fifth home run of the season, a solo shot to left field, giving the Cougars a 14-5 lead.

UCLA rallied in its half of the ninth, scoring five runs off WSU reliever Lanakila Niles, who followed Kenyon. Zach Fisher replaced Niles and recorded the final out of the game.

The two teams complete the series Sunday at noon at Jackie Robinson Stadium.
