Two Cougars in Top Five After Opening Round at Thunderbird Invite

ST.GEORGE, Utah- Washington State junior Chris Collins and redshirt junior Jordan Madison sit in third and fourth, respectively after the first round at the Thunderbird Invite held at the par-72, 6,781 yard Sunbrook Golf Course, Feb.13.

Collins carded a 5-under 67 to end the first round in third. The South Dakota native's first round score ties his career low. Collins rests one shot out of first heading into final round. Redshirt junior Jordan Madison also finished the day in the top five after shooting a 4-under 68 which landed him in a two-way tie for fourth.

Traveling for the first time this season, redshirt senior David Fern shot a 1-under 71 (36-35) to finish the day knotted in a seven-way tie for 15th. Senior Ryan Witz, who is one of four Cougars competing as an individual, also tied for 15th. After shooting a 2-over 38 on the front nine, Witz rebounded with a 3-under 33 on the back nine to bring his round one score up to 1-under 71.

Reshirt sophomore Matt Fladwood and freshman Max Reinland each shot 4-over 76 which landed them tied for 43rd. Each are competing as indivudals in the tournament and their scores will not be counted as part of the Cougar's team score.

Sophomore Jordan Mason and redshirt junior Chad Carlson head into round two tied at 71st. They both shot 8-over 80 to end round one. Junior Kevin Chen rounds out the Cougar contingent sitting in a two-way tie for 83rd. Chen also competed as an invidiual.

The Cougars sit in third place at 2-under 286 heading into the final round of the tournament. Host Southern Utah leads the field with a commanding 10-under 278. Defending tournament champion Denver rests in second place at 3-under 285.

The final 18 holes of the Thunderbird Invite tee off Tuesday, Feb. 14.
