PULLMAN, Wash. - First ever meetings are on tap for the Washington State women's swim team as it encounters No. 15 UCLA and Fresno State Jan. 16 at UCLA's Men's Gym Pool.

Although a long-time member of the Pacific-10 Conference, the Cougars surprisingly have never met UCLA in its 22 year history. The Bruins and Cougars have only met at the annual Pac-10 Championships and have never shared a one-on-one confrontation. UCLA was No. 13 and Fresno State No. 29 in the 1997-98 final NCAA women's swimming rankings.

The Cougars will compete in 14 of 16 swim events at the meet. UCLA will also compete in two diving events against Fresno State.

"I believe we can win 5 of the 14 events and win the small battle - instead of the big war," WSU coach Rocco Aceto said. "We are putting all the money in the bank and seeing how much we are going to take out."

Aceto and his Cougars, minus junior Kelley Miedema who trained back home in Cape Town, South Africa, have been in Pullman since Dec. 28 and trained intensively for two weeks. One week was spent tapering in WSU's Gibb Pool and one week in Spokane at the Whitworth College Aquatic Center, which included 22 workouts and upwards of 10 miles a day.

"We are 44 days out until our championships," Aceto said. "We are going down to UCLA to swim fast - not to see how training went over break. We want to make a statement with championships looming just around the corner."

Swimming NotesCougar Katie Keller has come out strong throughout the winter break in her freestyle events, Aceto said. The junior from Seattle, Wash. has a strong shot at making NCAAs this year, turning in practice times under the NCAA consideration standardAlways setting high standards in academics, the WSU swim team had six of its own represented on Cougar
