Port Orchard, Wash. --- The Washington State men's golf team fired a 366 at the Husky Invitational on Tuesday, overtaking Pac-10 rivals Stanford and Oregon State to finish in a tie for fifth.
The Cougars began the day in last place. They were able to jump five spots thanks to the play of a pair of freshmen. Isaac Woods (Enumclaw, Wash.) and Ryan Camp (Spokane, Wash.) tied for 23rd and 25th, respectively, to lead WSU. Woods recovered from a first round 81 by carding a 73 and 71 over the last 36 holes.
Sophomore Dustin White (Pueblo West, Colo.) matched Woods with a 71 of his own on Tuesday, helping him to a share of 29th.
Pepperdine fought off a late charge by Oregon to win the tournament by five strokes. Washington, who hosted the tournament at the par-72 Trophy Lake Golf Course, placed third.
Oregon's John Ellis outlasted Washington's Joey Ramos in a playoff to grab top individual honors.
For Washington State, beating Stanford and Oregon State was a huge step in the right direction. The Cougars had not finished ahead of another Pac-10 team since last year's Husky Invitational, where they beat California and placed fifth.
The Cougars return to the links on Oct. 1-3 at the Pacific Invitational in Stockton, Calif.
