Box Score

STANFORD, Calif. - Stanford received a dominating performance from a starting pitcher for the second-straight day and the No. 17 Cardinal defeated No. 28 Washington State 4-1 in the rubber match of a three-game Pacific-10 Conference series, Sunday at Sunken Diamond.

Jeffrey Inman (3-0) scattered eight hits and blanked the Cougars (16-9, 2-4 Pac-10) over seven and one-third innings while striking out five and walking one.

"It's a tough loss." WSU Head Coach Donnie Marbut said. "When you score one run in 16 innings (over the last two days) you are not going to win a lot of games."

Stanford (12-7, 2-1 Pac-10) scored all four of its runs in the fourth. Jason Castro and Randy Molina opened the inning with singles to put runners at the corners. Sean Ratliff followed with a RBI-double for the game's first score. After WSU starter Jared Prince (2-2) retired Austin Young on a ground out, Michael Ratigan came in from the bullpen and walked Zach Jones to load the bases.

Ratigan came back to strike out Jeff Whitlow, but walked Jake Schlander on five pitches to force in a run and make the score 2-0. Matt Way relieved Ratigan to face the Cardinal's leading hitter Cord Phelps. Stanford's second baseman lined the ninth pitch of the at bat into right field for a two-run single increasing the Cardinal lead to 4-0.

The run support was enough for Inman who threw 89 pitches, 57 for strikes. The Cougars threatened in the third with runners at second and third and one out. However, Inman retired Simi Reynolds and Paul Gran.

WSU's only run of the game came in the top of the ninth off reliever Drew Storen. Scott Suttmeier singled with one out and pinch hitter John Desmarais tripled into the right field corner to score Suttmeier.

The Cougars conclude their four-game road trip at Santa Clara, Monday at 1 p.m.
