Final Stats

STANFORD, Calif. - The Stanford Cardinal broke open a tie game with six runs in the seventh inning to post an 11-3 Pacific-10 Conference baseball win over Washington State Saturday afternoon at Sunken Diamond.

WSU (21-32 overall, 6-17 Pacific-10 Conference) starter Brandon Hundt (6-7) shut out the eighth ranked Cardinal for four innings and held them to just three runs through six innings. Billy Gorrell and Jamin Svendsen finished up for WSU, with allowing three Cardinal runs.

Dan Rich (2-2), the second of three pitchers used by Stanford (29-16, 15-8) picked up the win with two innings of work. Drew Ehrlich threw the ninth inning for the winners. John Hudgins started on the mound for Stanford and worked six innings, allowing five hits and two runs.

Hundt allowed just four hits through the first five innings and one run, unearned. In the sixth the Cougar starter gave up two hits as Stanford took a 3-1 lead on a run-scoring single by Scott Dragicevich and Brian Hall's sacrifice fly.

Meanwhile, Hudgins was equally effective against the Cougars, limiting the visitors to Jeff LaRue's solo home run to lead off the second. WSU also had just four hits through five innings and five after six innings.

In the seventh, the Cougars pulled even at 3-3 when Tyson Boston hit a two-run home run to right field, scoring Derek Bruce.

However, in the bottom of the seventh, Stanford broke the game open. Chris Carter opened the inning with a single off Hundt and Sam Fuld followed with a run-scoring double. Gorrell then entered in relief of Hundt, but he couldn't hold off the Cardinal.

Ryan Garko greeted Gorrell with a single and Jason Cooper followed with a run-scoring sacrifice fly to right field. Gorrell then hit Chris O'Riordan and walked Carlos Quentin to load the bases.

Cougar coach Tim Mooney then turned to Svendsen to halt the Cardinal run, but he gave up a sacrifice fly, a double to Hall and Andy Topham's single that accounted for four more Stanford runs and a 9-3 lead. The host club added two more runs in the eighth on pinch hitter Arik VanZandt's home run with one out.

The two teams conclude their three-game series Sunday at 1 p.m. For the Cougars, the season will end Sunday, while Stanford will await word on a post-season bid to one of the NCAA regionals.
